6 HUGE Reasons to Cherish Motherhood

Being a mother is hard work. Sometimes it can feel like there are more bad days than good ones! And while it’s so easy to lose perspective in the middle of the fray, here are 6 HUGE reasons to cherish motherhood.

6 HUGE Reasons to Cherish Motherhood

Keep this list to come back to every so often, because it will help you remember why it’s worth all the effort.

1.      You have Someone to Love

Even if your child is distant, physically or emotionally, you know there is someone on this earth to love. And if they are closer, that’s even better. It’s a universal cry really.  Queen aren’t the only ones who sing: “Lord, help me find somebody to love!”

The thing is, we often mistake love for a lovely romantic feeling. But really, loving someone is a decision. Being a mother is a long-term relationship, which in its most pure form, involves unconditional love and sacrifice.

Mothers have an amazing capacity for this sort of love. And the amazing thing is, it seems to be inherent and inbuilt, as Uma Thurman says below. So this is one reason why it’s good to cherish motherhood, because Mothers have incredible love-capacity.

Love is large and incredibly patient.
And love is gentle and consistently kind to all.
Love is a safe place of shelter, for it never stops
believing the best for others.

  1 Corinthians 13:4 (TPT)

2.      You are Loved by your Children

You cherish motherhood by acknowledging that in quite an amazing way you gave life to another human being. So, what’s not to love about that? Quite honestly, you are amazing.

And because of of this, your children love you, even if they don’t always show it. One day they will realize the cost you made in giving you life. I discovered, decades after my mother died, that she did a remarkable thing for me during her final weeks on earth. You can read about it here. This causes me to love her even more.

She is clothed with strength and dignity;
she can laugh at the days to come.
Her children arise and call her blessed

Proverbs 31: 25, 28a (NIV)

3.      You Receive a Blessing

You are blessed, no matter what your child is like, or how he or she has turned out, or how long (or short) you have them for. Because, if you had no child, your life would be emptier.

And your life would be far less rich.

Don’t you see that children are God’s best gift?
Like a warrior’s fistful of arrows are the children of a vigorous youth.
Oh, how blessed are you parents, with your quivers full of children!

Psalm 127:3, 4 (MSG)

4.      You are Making a Difference for the Next Generation

The next generation is critical to the future of the planet. And this is why it’s important for mothers to do their job well. Of course, part of doing the job well, is to cherish motherhood. It’s an overwhelming privilege to be a critical factor in bringing up a healthy and functional adult. In all honesty, you are working with God in his creative process.

Perhaps it didn’t work out as you hoped, and he or she is not as healthy and whole as you would have liked. Maybe you lost one, or even two, along the way.

But know this: Nothing is wasted. Your prayers can still be answered, because God always answers prayer, even if the answer is unexpected.

I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread.
They are always generous and lend freely; their children will be a blessing.

Psalm 37:25-26 (NIV)

5.      You Understand more about your Parents

Having a child means you understand so much more about your own mother. In effect, you learn to cherish motherhood in a generational sense. There are so many aspects of life that you cannot fully grasp until you have a child, and then you understand a little more of what it was like for your mother (and your father) to care for you.

In addition, you also have another perspective on, and admiration for, past generations of your family who also did the hard work of parenting and motherhood.

There is a time for everything, and a season for
every activity under heaven:

a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,

a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.

(Ecclesiastes 3:1, 4, 8, NIV)

6.      You have Worked with God as Co-Creator

Have a look at your child. Can you see those fingers? And those arms and eyes? Plus that beautiful hair and those little toenails? All of them were created within you as part of a miraculous transformation from just two tiny cells. And this child became a fully-formed human being in just 40 weeks, or maybe less. Amazingly, you are a co-creator with the living God.

Wow. Just wow.

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together
in my mother’s womb.

your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.

Psalm 139:13, 14 (NIV)

More people Cherish Motherhood than you realize

Especially, they treasure you.

So remember this: others cherish motherhood, and especially, they cherish your motherhood. And that’s because you are so important! So, know you are loved. By your children. By your partner, friends and family. But also, by your friend Jesus, who wants to know you closer than a brother.

One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

Proverbs 18:24 (NIV)
